How to reset e-bike controller

Many of us, including myself, used to think that the controller is just the little white LED screen placed on your e-bike, but I want to tell you that it’s a myth that needs to be debunked. During my vacation, there was enough free time to try out new things. Then, I started getting my hands dirty with the settings of my e-bike controller, and after a while, I accidentally changed the controller settings, which I didn’t even know. After that, my e-bike started an unusual activity, and I worried about what actually happened.

After messing around with the settings of the e-bike controller for a couple of hours, I was not able to troubleshoot my controller, and at last, I was left with only one option to look for and that was the user manual guide book which every company provides for their product specially written for experienced as well as for the beginners.

After opening the user manual and reading it for a while, I found the solution in the controller troubleshooting section and followed all the steps mentioned there. After completing all the steps when I started driving my e-bike to check, I was very happy because my e-bike was acting in the way it used to do before.  I will explain the steps I followed, but first, we need to understand the term controller.

Let’s understand the E-Bike Controller first:

Definition & Location:

• In the above diagram, we can see that the controller is connected with a lot of wires which are responsible for giving you the information on your LED screen as well as providing you with amazing features that you opt for before purchasing an e-bike.
• The controller is responsible for controlling functions such as pedal assist, cruise control, lights, the onboard LCD, the maximum speed limit, wheel size, power output according to the throttle response, and many more.
• The controller is located inside the motor housing of your e-bike. It acts like a central control system, and you can assume that it’s the brain of your lovely e-bike.

But what is the function of the controller?:

• Its primary function is to supply a perfect connection between motors, sensors, throttle, your LCD, and a connection to the battery.
• It also manages voltage, ampere input, and ampere output and controls all the critical functions on your e-bike.
• If the rider accelerates the throttle it’s the controller only which is responsible to send the message to the power motor to generate energy from the battery according to the requirement, I mean the whole calculation is done by the controller only.

Working of E-Bike controller:

Whoever rides an e-bike should know the workings of e-bike controllers. Below, I have tried to explain the workings of controllers in the simplest way.

• The first step of the e-bike controller is to look for the available power source in the battery installed on the e-bike.
• After that, it calculates the total battery voltage and distributes the power required by the controllers responsible for operating different functions on your e-bike.
• For example, in the case of a power motor, the controller identifies its total power requirement and determines at what intervals to supply the power.
• The controller is brilliant. When you twist down your throttle, the controller sends a message to the motor so that it can generate power according to its throttle requirement. The controller also calculates how much power output needs to be generated from the power motor.
• It also reads information about your brakes. When you pull the brake lever, the braking sensor reduces your forward momentum by activating the brake and cutting the power source from the motor, achieving a smoother and more balanced stop.
• It also controls the function of pedal assist, the lights installed on your e-bike, cruise control, the onboard LED screen, maximum speed, and many more.

Why we need to reset the e-bike controller:

Apart from my reason in which I was messing around with my controller settings just to explore my e-bike controller functions different settings and I came up with the activation of that function, which I wasn’t aware of, there can be many more reasons to reset your e-bike controller and a few of them I will cover in the below points:

• Resetting your controller can help you troubleshoot many significant issues, including software, battery, and motor issues.
• Anyone can accidentally change the controller settings. You need to reset your controller if you have made changes in the settings configuration or if you are facing issues with your e-bike.
• You are also required to reset your controller if you mess around with a lot of settings that you have made by doing experiments for the sake of knowledge and your e-bike is not working the way you want it to work.
• The process of resetting your e-bike helps to wipe out any problematic errors automatically if you are facing any and revert to the default or normal setting.
•  After completing the reset process, there is always a high chance of assurance that your e-bike will perform as well as it did when you first purchased it.

Steps to follow to reset the e-bike controller:

Resetting your e-bike controller might be challenging for most of you, but it’s not. Let me give you the steps to reset your e-bike controller so you don’t have to wander around and waste a lot of time. The steps below are universal or common to most e-bike brands I have experienced.

• The first step is to turn on your e-bike by holding the power button for a couple of seconds.
• Now, hold down the minus (-) and the key located on the left side of your e-bike for about two seconds.
• After that, look at your LED screen. A message will appear asking whether you want to reset the controller to its default setting.
• You must change the letter n to a y by pressing the plus button on your left handle.
•  Now, hold down the (i) button for a couple of seconds. After that, you will see a double zero on the LED screen.
• Congratulations! You have reset your e-bike controller. Enjoy!
