How long do e-bike batteries last
Proper battery care and maintenance should be considered while purchasing a brand-new e-bike. When I bought my brand-new Tenway e-bike, I decided to maintain my battery from day one to improve its performance and longevity.
For this, I always wanted to ensure that my e-bike battery’s internal cells worked well. After researching for a long while, I didn’t get an accurate, definitive answer on how many miles or years I could expect from my e-bike battery.
But after I complete my research, I want to share precisely what I learned with you all in the points below.
- Twenty thousand miles range is a baseline bottom you can expect from your typical lithium-ion battery.
- The higher end or maximum range you can expect is between thirty and thirty-five hundred miles, but it must use a modern level of pedal assistance because that helps your e-bike get the maximum range from your battery pack.
The most important thing I want to tell you all is that the lifespan of these e-bike batteries depends upon the total charging cycle, not the total miles or years you can expect to get. I will explain the term charging cycle in the points below.
- Every battery has a certain maximum level or capacity, which simply means how much it can hold after being charged.
- Okay, now let me explain it to you in a simple way. For example, if you have a 10-gallon gas tank, you can only fill it up to 10 gallons. You can either fill half of its total capacity or fill it completely.
- So, if we talk about the e-bike battery, its total capacity or total range is portrayed as a percentage.
- So, now you can assume a charging cycle of 0 percent to 100 percent. After complete discharge, when you charge it again to 100 percent, it is calculated as one cycle.
- More simply, if you use the total 100 percent and then charge it again to 100 percent, it will be counted as one complete cycle.
- Companies like Aventon, Tenway, Himway, etc., are reputed e-bike manufacturers that list their total charge cycles. For example, one of Aventon’s models mentions 800 charging cycles.
I have done a very simple calculation to calculate the total range one can expect from their total cycles. Most of us want to purchase class 2 e-bikes because we get a thumb throttle to boost our speed. According to US jurisdiction, the maximum speed limit is 25 miles/ hour.
- So, with a maximum speed of 25 miles and a battery of 800 cycles, one can expect a total range
-
-
-
-
- 25 miles * 800 cycles = 20,000 miles.
-
-
-
-
- I have mentioned the above calculation for the riders if they are only reliable on the throttle assist system because that uses the maximum power from the battery pack.
- You can expect more if you use a pedal assist system and thumb throttle assist for commuting.
- It also depends upon your riding style. You can cross even the 30,000-mile mark if you drive your e-bike smoothly, not aggressively.
- Regarding my e-bike, I have crossed the 28,000-mile mark with my e-bike battery having 800 charging cycles.
- I also know that riding my e-bike with a low level of pedal assist can give me even more range.
So, in a nutshell, the maximum range will depend on your riding style and the maintenance and care you do with your e-bike battery.
PLEASE NOTE:
- If you are planning to purchase cargo e-bikes, you must be aware that they require more power, and to generate more energy, a bigger battery must be installed.
- E-bike batteries come in different sizes, and it totally depends upon your e-bike manufacturer or the e-bike model you are purchasing.
Points that affect the range of your e-bike:
The following are the number of factors that can affect the range of your e-bike.
- If you are riding against the wind, uphill will impact your speed, and the range will also be shortened because the power hub motor needs more power from the battery because it’s climbing against gravity.
- If you have class 2 e-bikes, you will have an option for pedal assist and throttle twist. If you use more throttle control drive than pedal assist, your battery lifespan will eventually decrease, and you will also get less range.
- If your e-bikes are equipped with fat tires, they have a greater rolling effect than skinny tires. This causes more friction for the tires, and as a result, the traveling range is also decreased.
What is an e-bike battery?
I was keen to know about the working mechanism of my e-bike battery. After researching and discussing it with battery manufacturers, I was able to obtain information that I would like to share with you all today.
- There is always a battery pack installed in our e-bike that provides the power source.
- From the outside, the battery pack appears as a long, singular unit, but that’s not the truth. Within that black box, a collection of battery units is combined to form a large battery pack.
Larger battery packs gave e-bikes a decent range. For this reason, my friends, who had been using their e-bikes for more than 3 to 4 years, advised me to get an e-bike with a larger battery pack so that I could enjoy my rides, especially on my longer trips, without worrying about a quick discharge.
I have attached below a video link where you can learn more about e-bike batteries; feel free to check this out.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Experts always recommend that when purchasing a new e-bike, one should look for one that accepts a dual battery setup.
- A dual battery setup has advantages, such as reducing your e-bike’s weight on short trips.
- Reducing weight helps the battery generate less power, resulting in good pick-up, an increase in driving range, and an increase in the lifespan of the e-bike battery.
- Extra weight slows you down and requires more power to overcome. As a result, the battery is under more load, and the battery’s life is also reduced.
- Please ask your e-bike manufacturers whether they provide an overcharge protection feature with their e-bike models. This will increase the battery’s lifespan.
- If you have already purchased your e-bike without the overcharge protection feature, please try disconnecting your charger as soon as it reaches 100 percent charge.
I hope that this article has helped you a lot and that I was able to provide information related to increasing your e-bike battery lifespan, proper maintenance, etc. If not, feel free to leave me a comment, and I will try to help you resolve the issue.
